LONGHAIRED cavies, as the name suggests, are those who have very long hair. The hair on these piggies grows to an average of 12 inches (30cm), but can grow anywhere up to 20 inches (50cm). The hair grows at an average of 1 inch (3 cm) per month and needs to looked after stricktly to avoid tangles and knots.

To keep the coat to a show standard, exhibitors "wrap" the coats daily to stop the hair flowing loose and to avoid woodchips and other foreign items getting caught in the coat. The hair is regularly bathed and brushed.

When a longhair is kept for exhibiting, it is generally kept on its own to prevent other cavies chewing its coat (a major fault) and when they are bred, their coats are generally cut short.

Longhaired cavies can be of any colour to be exhibited in Australia.
